Crown Point, Indiana Downtown Parking & Circulation Plan
Crown Point, in northwest Indiana, is a rapidly growing community with a traditional downtown surrounding its prominent historic courthouse. The city's vision of a vibrant and thriving downtown has been clouded by high traffic volumes, truck traffic, parking challenges, confusing one-way circulation, high crash rates, and an unwelcoming pedestrian environment.

Business operators, residents, city staff, and city officials have dedicated their time and energy to overcome these challenges and build consensus on practical and effective solutions. LSL led this team in preparation of a plan to improve circulation, parking, wayfinding, and urban design.

A high standard was set by the city to ensure recommendations were innovative, yet feasible. A phasing plan was provided for gradual implementation of the comprehensive menu of recommendations which included:
- Conversion of one-way streets to two-way streets
- Relocation and retiming of traffic signals
- Long term realignment of one of the main entry streets
- Improved readability of traffic signs and pavement markings
- Changing on-street parking to reverse angle parking
- Improved parking enforcement to keep prime on-street parking spaces available
- Installation of curb bump-outs, wider sidewalks, and narrowing of traffic lanes to increase pedestrian space
- Better wayfinding to public parking and key destinations
- Installing of gateway elements that signify entry into downtown and reflect its unique character
- Identification of key redevelopment sites
