Like many Midwest cities, Kalamazoo has experienced steady economic growth while battling sporadic recession woes and poor economies. Unlike many less fortunate cities, Kalamazoo has weathered the storm and has poised itself, through hard work and sound planning, as a regional center in Southwest Michigan and is reaping the benefits of its redeveloping, historic downtown.
LSL led a multi-disciplinary team to refresh the City’s downtown plan to proactively plan for a vibrant, mixed-use City center. Building upon previous planning efforts, the update involved an extensive public involvement initiative including focus groups, interviews, and public workshops. Implementation strategies were developed that address land use and development, the large student population, transportation, jobs, arts & culture, global and national trends and special projects. |
