Grosse Ile, an island community nestled in the Detroit River, faces the challenge of managing development while retaining its unique natural characteristics and high quality of life. LSL has assisted with many tools to help accommodate quality development, while ensuring the sustainability of the island and protecting the natural features that create a sense of identity. These include a Master Plan with guidelines for preservation of natural features, an updated Zoning Ordinance with many unique waterfront provisions, a Wetlands & Waterways Protection Ordinance, and a Stormwater Ordinance.
The township has been aggressive in its attempts to preserve open space through efforts to purchase the land under an open space/greenways program. This has been possible through a millage passed for the last several years by township residents. This program has been very successful and is used as a model elsewhere in the state.
