Oakland Township is a quiet community in northern Oakland County that for years has strived to protect the pristine natural environment and quality of life so valuable to its residents.
The goal of the Oakland Township Parks, Recreation, and Land Preservation Plan was to explore opportunities that balanced the desires of residents to preserve open space and help meet increasing demands for active recreation from horseback riders, mountain bikers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts. Those diverse interests were a great resource as the plan evolved through a successful public involvement that included a short survey, public workshops, focus group meetings with recreation providers, a public open house, and public hearings. Each offered opportunities for residents to get involved, stay informed and offer their ideas for the type of recreation needed in the community.
Key recommendations included a wide variety of concepts to meet the varies expirations. Existing parks were divided into categories of Passive, Moderately Passive and Moderately Active. Township-wide pathway connections with links to the regional trail system were included. Among the many recommendations to expand programs were additions to public education on environmental best practices.
