After developing a multi-jurisdiction comprehensive plan, La Porte County, the City of La Porte, and the City of Michigan City decided to take the next step and develop a joint set of zoning and subdivision control ordinances. LSL Planning and Williams Creek Consulting are working with the county and the two cities to develop an ordinance that meets the needs of all three jurisdictions, is user-friendly, and meets the objectives of the coastal management program that is funding part of the effort. A technical committee and a steering committee are providing input and comments to the draft ordinances as they are developed. Issues covered include coastal areas, beachfront development, downtowns, industrial development, signs, wind energy, and farmland preservation.
